School Menu Changes Possible Due to Vendor Supply Shortages

A surge in demand from New York State’s new Universal Free Meals Program is creating food vendor supply shortages for schools across the state, including Pittsford. The program, put in place by Governor Hochul in May 2025 and launched in September, requires schools to provide free breakfast and lunch to students, regardless of income.

Because every district participating in the National School Lunch Program pulls from the same network of vendors, suppliers are struggling to keep up with demand. As a result, some menu items may change on short notice. “While menu items may change depending on what is currently available, students can expect to see choices that are as close as possible to the original item listed on the menu,” said Food Services Director Elena Montgomery. “For example, healthy selections will continue to be available, but a student’s favorite fruit or milk choice may not be an option some days depending on what vendors have on hand,” she explained.

In Pittsford Schools, the Universal Free Meals Program is already making a clear impact on meal participation:

• On the first day of school, more than 700 breakfasts were served—compared to none last year.
• Lunch participation has doubled and continues to grow.

Despite statewide challenges, Pittsford’s Food Services team remains focused on serving healthy, appealing meals to students each day.
